We offer the complete solution for your drivetrain in shipbuilding
ATEK Drive Solutions stands for customized system solutions around the propeller shaft in shipbuilding – with a focus on powerful, durable, and project-ready documented shaft brake systems for ships. Whether luxury yacht, submarine, research vessel, fish protection boat, or military vessel: We not only supply components but complete, individually tailored brake systems – from the first idea through design, construction, and realization to steel construction, piping, hydraulics, control, and repair and maintenance services. This gives decision-makers a solution “from a single source” that is technically well specified and can be reliably integrated into the maritime drivetrain.
We systematically consider the special challenges at sea – saltwater, humidity, heat, and frost – in material selection, surface treatment, and corrosion protection. Depending on the requirement, customer-specific painting to the “Highest Yacht Standard” is possible. This creates a shaft brake system that not only convinces in the specification sheet but also in daily operation through durability, availability, and planned maintenance.
Shaft brake, locking & turning: Functions that secure ship operations
ATEK shaft brake systems for ships are designed to control the deceleration of the propeller shaft from speed and to reliably block and hold it when stationary. This creates defined, reproducible conditions for operation and maintenance, increases safety when working on the drivetrain, and supports clear maneuvering and stopping processes.
Depending on the operational concept, the system can be configured modularly and can consist of braking (shaft brake), locking (blocking device), and turning (turning system). We realize impressive performance values even for the most demanding requirements with a braking torque of up to 350,000 Nm, a turning torque of up to 80,000 Nm, and a blocking torque of up to 400,000 Nm. The system is typically complemented by a hydraulic or electro-hydraulic unit and a freely configurable control, so that both economical standard variants and complex premium versions can be realized – tailored to loads, installation space, and onboard processes.
Classification, documentation, FAT: project-ready until acceptance
ATEK Drive Solutions supports you from the design and calculation to the complete documentation and acceptance of the shaft brake system. On request, we realize shock tests, for example, according to BR3021, as well as acceptance according to the guidelines of common classification societies such as DNV GL, Bureau Veritas, or Lloyd’s Register. FATs can be conducted directly with us in-house to reduce project risks before installation and make commissioning more predictable.
In execution, various integration and service options are possible, such as split brake discs with hubs for radial installation, corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel, nickel-plated surfaces, and monitoring functions for braking torque and blocking states including starting protection and optional remote control from the bridge or engine control room. For a quick technical clarification, it is sufficient if you send us the shaft diameter, speed, desired braking and holding torque, installation space, ship type, and relevant classification requirements – we will promptly come back to you with a structured proposal for the appropriate system configuration.
